This session is interested in current research integrating archaeological and scientific analysis of ceramics in the Asia-Pacific region. Ceramics are common and complex materials, and their analysis can reveal insights into the behaviors of the people who made and used them, and how production and distribution were organized. The session aims to explore a wide range of questions touching on craft practice, production technology, change and innovation, use, mobility, exchange, and social networks as applied to excavated and surveyed ceramics. We invite papers from researchers who are applying different analytical and experimental methods to the study of archaeological ceramics, such as ceramic petrography, scanning electron microscopy, and neutron activation analysis, for compositional, microstructural, and technological analysis. Papers may focus on a single site, examine cross-site connections, or address broader regional patterns. The session aims to foster dialogue between scientific, experimental, and traditional archaeological approaches and promote collaboration that contributes to the development of regional reference datasets and comparative frameworks, strengthening the foundation for future comparative studies across the Asia-Pacific region.
