Students must be enrolled in an honours, master’s, or doctoral programme at the time of essay submission deadline.
The essay must be based on the thesis topic conducted by the student while enrolled in the programme and must be presented in person at the IPPA 23rd Congress in Yogyakarta in November 2026. Remote or proxy presentations are not eligible.
The essay must be the student’s own research. Co‑authored papers are eligible only if the student is the lead author and the research is demonstrably the original authorship of the student.
The full essay must be submitted on or before the 30th of September 2026. Late submissions will not be considered.
Maximum of 2,000 words, excluding references, tables, figures and captions.
Submitted as a PDF document.
Written in English.
Any recognised academic referencing style may be used, provided it is applied consistently.
Figures and tables are permitted and must include captions and sources.
Background of the Research and Scholarly Context
Introduce the research topic, its significance, and its relevance to Indo‑Pacific archaeology or heritage studies.
Summarise key published literature.
Identify what is known, what is debated, and what remains unresolved.
Clearly articulate the specific gap your research addresses.
Methodology
Describe the research design, fieldwork, analytical methods, datasets, and tools used.
Explain why these methods are appropriate for the research question.
Summary of Data and Results
Present the core findings of the study.
Include tables, figures, or maps where relevant.
Ensure that data presentation is clear, concise, and directly linked to the research question.
Discussion and Conclusion
Interpret the results in relation to the research gap and broader scholarship.
Discuss implications for regional or thematic debates.
Conclude with key insights, limitations, and potential directions for future research.
Essays must be emailed to the IPPA Secretariat, secgen@ippasecretariat.org, including:
Full name
Institutional affiliation
Title of the accepted paper as published in the IPPA website
Session number and full session title
Name of supervisor
Originality and significance of the research.
Clarity and coherence of arguments and ideas.
Quality of data, methods, and analysis.
Contribution to Indo‑Pacific archaeology or heritage studies.
Quality of writing, structure, and presentation.
Adherence to the required format.
The winners will be announced during the Closing Ceremony of the IPPA 23rd Congress in Yogyakarta.
Prizes Include:
Certificate of Recognition
AUD 400 cash for the first prize
AUD 300 cash for the 2nd prize
Other special prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel for exceptional merit in any category (e.g., innovation, methodological rigour, or regional contribution)
