The 23rd IPPA Congress
The 23rd IPPA Congress
S55
This session honours the legacy of our late Prof. John N. Miksic (1946-2025), whose extensive contributions have significantly shaped the field of historical archaeology across the Indo-Pacific region. Prof. Miksic conducted research at major World Cultural Heritage sites such as Borobudur, Bagan, and Angkor. His vital and long-term archaeological work in Singapore, Indonesia, and various sites in Malaysia and Thailand has deepened our understanding of the complexities of cities, urbanism, and cultural exchange throughout the Indo-Pacific region. He provided invaluable insights into the region’s rich archaeological landscape. His dedication to educating and mentoring students and scholars has fostered a new generation of researchers committed to exploring Southeast Asia’s past. The goal of this session is to facilitate multidisciplinary discussions of Prof. Miksic’s methodologies and findings, while also examining future directions in archaeological research and heritage studies in the Indo-Pacific region. We invite participants to submit papers that focus on historical archaeology and heritage studies in the Indo-Pacific region or that reflect on Prof. Miksic’s legacy and its impact on ongoing research and understanding in the field.
