The study of cultural intersection among ancient Southeast Asian cultures remains a compelling subject for historians and archaeologists. Drawing upon extensive research on the Đại Việt’s architectural materials, combined with fieldwork and artifact collection conducted under the mentorship of Professor John Miksic in programs for young Southeast Asian archaeologists, this study provides a comparative analysis of selected architectural material typologies. The research focuses on the flourishing period of the Đại Việt in relation to its contemporaries, including the royal capitals of the Khmer, Ayutthaya, and Majapahit empires. The primary objective is to identify shared characteristics and distinct indigenous traits in the forms and decorative motifs of the Đại Việt’s architectural materials compared to their counterparts across ancient Southeast Asian countries. The findings reveal a "Same same but Different" relationship, particularly evident in tiles and rooftop ornamental components. These similarities reflect the profound impact of regional cultural exchange networks and maritime trade. Conversely, the differences highlight the unique ingenuity and indigenous creativity of the Đại Việt as it navigated and adapted within the broader regional cultural sphere. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how localized identity was maintained and expressed through the materiality of architecture amidst the historical currents of Southeast Asian integration.
