The 23rd IPPA Congress
The 23rd IPPA Congress
S25
This session focuses on recent archaeological discoveries of ceramics in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing their significance in both regional and global interconnections. Although there have been numerous reports of ceramic kilns at land and underwater sites in recent decades, several key aspects remain underexplored. These include how production, transportation, and consumption patterns addressed local needs versus export demands, the extent to which artisans adapted to imported ceramics, and how these factors reshaped ceramic production and marketing strategies. Are there distinct patterns in the manufacture, distribution, and use of earthenware, unglazed stoneware, and glazed ceramics throughout the Indo-Pacific and beyond? We invite submissions highlighting recent findings from investigated or excavated sites in the Indo-Pacific region, including artifacts exchanged through local, regional or global networks. To promote a multidisciplinary dialogue, we particularly encourage presentations that incorporate archaeological science, digital archiving, museum curation, network visualization, or analyses using artificial intelligence tools. By bringing together diverse perspectives, this themed session aims to uncover broader regional and global trends in ceramic economies, inspiring collaborative insights into cultural exchanges and technological choices.
