The 23rd IPPA Congress
The 23rd IPPA Congress
1 Nov 2026 workshops
2-7 Nov 2026
Yogyakarta
This workshop stems from a belief that world archaeology must be rewritten more equitably, with a greater contribution from the Global South, whose archaeology is some of the richest in the world, yet whose archaeologists are often underrepresented in international publishing, research agendas, funding and networks.
The purpose of this workshop is, then, to help strengthen the ability of IPPA community members, and especially Early Career Researchers, to write, submit and publish their research on the archaeology and heritage of Indo-Pacific prehistory.
Guidance focuses on helping participants write-up their research for publication in English-language, international and regional, academic archaeology journals.
Workshop structure
The first half of the workshop comprises a wide-ranging masterclass presentation. Areas include: choosing a topic with originality and impact; considering different kinds of journal articles; writing in the English language (or not); thinking about an article’s scope and audience; choosing the right title, structure and style; bibliographic referencing; illustrations; supplementary materials; copyright; using AI tools; publishing ethics; targeting a journal; manuscript submission; peer review and responding to feedback; article production and publication processes and timescales.
The second half will then offer personalised advice to participants in response to any questions.
About the convenors
The workshop will be led by the general editor of the global archaeology journal, Antiquity, the Joint Editor in Chief of leading global cross-field anthropology journal Current Anthropology, and the Associate Editor of Archaeological Research in Asia in collaboration with regional archaeology journal editors, academics and heritage professionals, drawing on their inside-knowledge and experience of archaeological publishing.
It builds upon four years’ experience gained during a series of successful ‘Rewriting World Archaeology’ workshops held in South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, sponsored by the Antiquity Trust and the British Academy.
Intended outcome
The intended outcome is to see the research of a greater number and diversity of IPPA community members published in regional and international archaeology journals for the benefit of world archaeology.
