Knowledge system plays a vital role in sustaining cultures and shaping cultural interactions. Across maritime networks, ideas, commodities and people travel across the oceans, creating dynamic processes of exchange that influence societies over time. These interactions not only assist contact but also contribute to the resilience and continuity of cultural traditions. The regions of South Asia and Southeast Asia provide an important context for understanding such exchanges. Earlier scholarship on their relationships was largely framed through the concept of “Indianization,”. This paper explores the two-way nature of exchanges between South Asia and Southeast Asia across several domains, including plant resources, ideology, writing system, navigation and material culture. In the area of spices, shipbuilding and navigation, Southeast Asian influences are seen. In ideology and writing system, South Asian influence is noticed. However, there existed subtle influences of local traditions in many spheres of activity. By adopting a more nuanced approach, this study highlights the multidirectional nature of cultural interactions and emphasises how knowledge systems helped sustain and transform relationships across the maritime world.
