The ancient world had preserved much of its prehistoric roots in religion. Asia has been uniquely placed as a land noted for so much of animistic traditions traceable back to prehistory. This may explain why the ancient stones, especially the megaliths, have come to be treated as sites of veneration. There are sites in south India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, etc. where megaliths have been visited by people for worship. This session is devoted exclusively to prehistoric-proto historic sites transformed into cult spots in Asia. It gives researchers with a background in archaeology, history, and anthropology to delve deeper into ancient religion and its continuities. Papers can be based on exploration, supported by empirical data on features of sites and monuments, nature of conversion into cult spots, oral testimonies, and interpretations on the religious culture of Asia. There can also be papers devoted to prehistoric-protohistoric religion based on archaeological data.
