The 23rd IPPA Congress

With the current advocacy on revisiting and reinterpreting the archaeological record through the investigation of past foodways, this session focuses on the intertwined ecological, cultural, and material dimensions of food in the Indo-Pacific region. It foregrounds foodways as a vital lens through which identities, cultures, technology, and environmental relationships are interconnected and negotiated. For this session we invite contributions that examine the meanings and materiality of foodways and culinary practices through floral and faunal remains, lithics, ceramics, and metal implements, as well as related structural installations, land- and waterscapes as evidence of social identities and organization, technologies, practices, lived experiences, memories and diasporas, and symbolic expressions. We encourage interdisciplinary presentations, including those that integrate archaeological science, history, the arts, the humanities, and anthropological approaches.
