The 23rd IPPA Congress
The 23rd IPPA Congress
S30
This session explores the complexities of archaeomusicology, ethnographic inquiry, and artistic expression in interpreting intangible cultural heritage across the Indo-Pacific region. We invite papers that examine the auditory and performative elements of musical artefacts and traditions in the region, for instance, the percussion-rich ensembles across Southeast Asia and the various traditional and Indigenous music of the Indo-Pacific. Through an interdisciplinary investigation or re-investigation of material culture, including organological analysis, sonic and experimental reconstructions, or ethnohistorical documentation, this session aims to foster discussions on musical culture and representations of sound, archiving and preservation, and the interpretation of musical knowledge systems across time and space, thereby broadening our understanding of the archaeological record in the region.
