Oc Eo was a flourishing port city of the Mekong Delta engaging in trade from afar during the 1st millennium CE. Many associate the establishment of Oc Eo with Indian influence and contact. Through pottery analysis, using both typological and elemental characterisation, this presentation will illustrate how initial Indian contact might potentially have been established before the settlement of Oc Eo developed into an urban centre. It will also discuss how the expansion of Oc Eo correlated with some shifts in exchange networks identified in the Mekong Delta region.
