One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure: An Exploratory Research on the Application of Archaeological Methods to Study Food-Related Waste in a Rehabilitated Sanitary Landfill of Brgy. San Jose Sico, Batangas City, Batangas

Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines

This exploratory research attempts to apply archaeological methodologies to reconstruct recent past human dietary practices using unearthed garbage deposits in a rehabilitated sanitary landfill site in Batangas City, Batangas. The aim of the project  is to reconstruct food consumption behavior of urban-rural communities in the recent past. This study will be guided by the Input-Process-Output Model of Waring (1996), which best describes the structure of the process. The site will be mapped and excavation will include chrono-stratigraphic and matrix recording, and documentation. Absolute dating of the accumulated deposits will be based on manufacturing and/or expiration dates still visible on packaging. Any resulting findings and experiences will be incorporated into the recommendations for future research, and assess potential improvements in methodologies used in the excavation of archaeological deposits. It is expected that the results of the study will contribute to bodies of archaeological and anthropological knowledge, as well as provide base guidelines and opportunities for future research and exploration in garbology in Southeast Asia.
