Threading Connections: A Preliminary, Multi-Level Analysis of Beads From the Agusan River Valley

Archaeological Studies Program, University of the Philippines Diliman, Philippines

The study of glass and stone beads can help determine the intensity and extent of interregional maritime trade in Southeast Asia. However, the paucity of a reliable compositional dataset for beads found in Philippine terrestrial sites hinders our understanding of their role in these trading networks. This poster presents the preliminary findings from a multi-level analysis of 200 stone, glass, and metal beads from the Agusan River Valley Archaeology and Heritage Project based at the Archaeological Studies Program, University of the Philippines Diliman. Morphological analysis revealed a preference for certain bead shapes and colors, which likely reflects the community’s values. The study also identified two possible production sites based on minor and trace elemental compositions, further strengthening the connections between pre-colonial Philippine communities and the wider interregional trade network in Southeast Asia.
