Amarapura Old City (1782- 1858 CE) is one of Myanmar’s ancient cities, located south of Mandalay City (The last Kingdom of Myanmar, 1857-1885 CE) and the north of Innwa (Ava) Old City (1365-1842 CE). Recent excavations at Taungthaman reservoir site (U Sein Maung Oo, 1971-1972) has indicated that communities have occupied Amarapura since the Neolithic, highlighting its antiquity and significance. Like other important sites within the cityscape surrounding Mandalay, this historic city with its multitude of monuments is easily accessible to the general public. However, cultural heritage and the tourism industry in this old cityscape are still challenging, requiring the design and application of effective risk management plans to enhance the long term viability and preservation of the archaeological monuments. In this presentation I will address the types of planning that are ongoing for the long-term protection of Amarapura within the broader cityscape of the region.
