Strategies for Sustainable Heritage Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach

NIT, Durgapur; Army Institute of Management, India

Most individuals place a high importance and social value on heritage. A country's cultural heritage comprises both tangible and intangible aspects including a variety of monuments, historic structures, arts and crafts, indigenous talents and customs. Through these tangible objects and intangible traditions, both personal and collective identities are established. The emergence of risks to cultural resources through deterioration, loss, or destruction has emerged as a major issue today. Heritage has evolved into an important component of the tourism sector. It may be regarded as cultural capital. Since Heritage is essentially a non-marketed product, the valuation procedure for this capital is quite complicated. A multidisciplinary approach is thus required to formulate the strategies and assess the economics behind sustaining any heritage site. Various approaches for valuing environmental resources that are comparable in nature to Heritage sites have resulted in the formation of economic valuation models, specifically for the valuation of Heritage sites as cultural assets. This presentation discusses the application of an economic valuation model known as the Travel Cost Method – a method applied to bring sustainability of the heritage site. How the Travel Cost Method is applied will be demonstrated through case studies on selected heritage sites in West Bengal, eastern India.
