Burials are important sources of musical artefacts, and it is necessary to combine archaeology and music in their interpretation to elucidate music and performance in prehistory. This presentation surveys a number of sites in Southeast Asia where the presence of music can be further investigated. It will particularly present case studies from Vietnam and the Philippines which indicate how music could have been an important part of burying the dead. This research also highlights the role of collaborative and specialist interests in understanding areas such as music and performance in Southeast Asian archaeology.
