Wood Coffin Burial Culture in Sabah, Malaysia

The wood coffin burial culture in Sabah, Malaysia has existed for at least 1000 BP and is still practiced by certain ethnic groups, particularly in Kinabatangan and Lahad Datu districts, Sabah. This paper presents the wood coffin burial culture in Sabah and compares it with other wood coffin cultures across the region in terms of similarities and differences in coffin types, temporal sequencing through chronometric dating, and the traditions connected to this unique method of interring the dead in Southeast Asia and China.
