Painting Fibre in Arnhem Land Rock Art

Griffith University, Australia

Fibre objects have been a central part of life for people around the world for thousands of years. However, they are often under researched in an archaeological context. In some parts of the world, they are also represented in the rock art. This includes western Arnhem Land where they have been depicted throughout the stylistic sequence over thousands of years up to the recent past. This paper explores the depictions of fibre objects in the rock art at different points in time and the changes that have occurred. This includes early depictions of ceremonies, as well as recent art made in response to the colonisation of Arnhem Land. Overall, this shows that despite the many changes that have occurred over time, fibre objects have continued to play many important roles, especially in the rock art.
