The Thap Jars of the Dong Son

Institute of Archaeology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Vietnam

Vietnam’s Dong Son is one of the most famous Metal Age archaeological cultures of Southeast Asia. The Dong Son is well known for its rich, diverse and unique body of artifacts., with probably the best known being tools, instruments and jewelry manufactured from bronze. The “thap dong” (bronze jars) are one of the typical relics of Dong Son culture. Almost all of the cylindrical jars have decoration on their body, and motifs on their lids that are typical of the period. The decoration on the jars is quite sophisticated with intricate motifs and designs that have significant artistic value, and probably similar embedded meaning to the better known Dong Son drums. However, the origins and geographic distribution of thap jar is still poorly understood. It is likely that they are of Vietnamese in origin, with a few having been traded into China. Together with the Dong Son drum, the “thap dong” (bronze jar) contribute to highlighting the indigenous origin of the Dong Son Culture in Vietnam.
